Broken Banknote Libre! Painting

SHOW RETURN

30x48 Oil & Cuban currency on panel
Libre! is an interesting piece that has won an award in every show it has been in …well, except this last one. The show runner had nice words for me, but while it was supposedly the favorite of the MFA students, it took no prize. Not even honorable mention.

The constructs are not about beauty, and as always we are obsessed by beauty. In the end, this piece examines the now obsolete Cuban Convertible Peso. I use color and space to represent the vacant ideas behind failed monetary policy, crumbling regimes and embargoed peoples. The faint images of Che, who never appeared on the Convertible peso are on purpose. It is a hint at what could have been and also a nod to ones own undoing in the name of ideology.
I could go on...

Show Return
This has been on display in Texas for several months at the SFA University gallery. Its future remains in limbo, as currently, outside of institutional display, this work is not for sale.
